Reddest Red Sun | The Miracles of Chairman Mao | Youth

Youth - a 1977 feature film by Xie Jin. Joan Chen stars in her screen debut as a deaf-mute peasant whose life is transformed by the curative miracles of PLA-administered acupuncture.

Loose Tongues

After a period of painstaking treatment, the moment of truth for Yamei comes in the most picturesque and idyllic spot: a beautiful mountain area located in the lush landscape of southern China that has so often been extolled in the art and poetry of the 'feudal' past. It is here that the long-silent Yamei finds voice.

Most miraculous is the fact that her first words are in the perfect enunciation of the Beijing dialect, that is Standard Chinese. Finally she too can chant the slogan that so agonizingly eluded her at Tiananmen Square: "Long-live-Chairman-Mao!" The delightful irony of this moment was lost on none, for the film was completed when Mao, a man whom countless millions had repeatedly prayed would "live for ten-thousand long lives without limit," had already died. Or, as he put it, "had gone to meet Marx."
