Reddest Red Sun | The Miracles of Chairman Mao | A Song of Triumph |
|
A short excerpt from
A Song of Triumph for Chairman Mao's Proletarian Line on Public
Health, a 1969 documentary film produced by the Chinese government
showing PLA medical workers treating deaf-mute children at a school
in rural China:
The Role of the People's Liberation Army
In the New China, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) was seen as a true People's Army: from the people, of the people, and for the people. During the Cultural Revolution, while all other national institutions were thrown into confusion or their legitimacy questioned, the PLA remained relatively stable. As the Party reasserted its authority with the support of the army in 1968-69, the media was filled with reports of the extraordinary contributions the army was making to national life. In particular the army as the loyal students of Mao Zedong Thought were depicted as being the staunchest supporters of Mao, and their deeds were chronicled as evidence of their fealty to the Chairman. The dispatching of PLA medical teams throughout the country was a particularly high-profile activity.
