Quotations on Education from Chairman Mao
- China Pictorial 1968.2, p.22
The intellectuals will accomplish nothing if they fail to integrate
themselves with the workers and peasants. In the final analysis, the
dividing line between revolutionary intellectuals and
non-revolutionary or counter-revolutionary intellectuals is whether
or not they are willing to integrate themselves with the workers and
peasants and actually do so. - "The May 4th Movement", May 1939
The educational policy of the college [i.e. the Anti-Japanese
Military and Political College] is to cultivate a firm and correct
political orientation, an industrious and simple style of work, and
flexible strategy and tactics. These are the three essentials in the
making of an anti-Japanese revolutionary soldier. It is in
accordance with these essentials that the staff teach and the
students study. - "To Be Attacked by the Enemy Is Not a Bad Thing
But a Good Thing", May 26, 1939
Imperialist culture and semi-feudal culture are devoted brothers and
have formed a reactionary cultural alliance against China's new
culture. This kind of reactionary culture serves the imperialists
and the feudal class and must be swept away. Unless it is swept
away, no new culture of any kind can be built up. There is no
construction without destruction, no flowing without damming and no
motion without rest; the two are locked in a life-and-death
struggle. - "On New Democracy", January 1940
Our educational policy must enable everyone who receives an
education to develop morally, intellectually and physically and
become a worker with both socialist consciousness and culture. - "On
the Correct Handling of Contradictions Among the People", February
27, 1957
Both students and intellectuals should study hard. In addition to
the study of their specialized subjects, they must make progress
both ideologically and politically, which means that they should
study Marxism, current events and politics. Not to have a correct
political point of view is like having no soul. Ibid.
Our writers and artists, scientists and technicians, professors and
teachers are all educating students, educating the people. Being
educators and teachers, they themselves must first be educated. And
all the more so in the present period of great change in the social
system.... Naturally, we have to learn while teaching and be pupils
while serving as teachers. To be a good teacher, one must first be a
good pupil. There are many things which cannot be learned from books
alone; one must learn from those engaged in production, from the
workers, from the poor and lower middle peasants and, in schools,
from the students, from those one teaches. - "Speech at the Chinese
Communist Party's National Conference on Propaganda Work", March 12,
1957
Education must serve proletarian politics and must be combined with
productive labour. The working people should master knowledge and
the intellectuals should become habituated to manual labour. - "On
Khrushchov's Phoney Communism and Its Historical Lessons for the
World", Renmin Ribao July 14, 1964
Hold high the great banner of the proletarian cultural revolution,
thoroughly expose the reactionary bourgeois stand of those so-called
"academic authorities" who oppose the Party and socialism,
thoroughly criticize and repudiate the reactionary bourgeois ideas
in the sphere of academic work, education, journalism, literature
and art and publishing, and seize the leadership in these cultural
spheres. - "Circular of the Central Committee of the Chinese
Communist Party", May 16, 1966
There is no construction without destruction. Destruction means
criticism and repudiation; it means revolution. It involves
reasoning things out, which is construction. Put destruction first,
and in the process you have construction. Ibid.
This holds good for students too. While their main task is to study,
they should in addition to their studies, participate in other
things, that is, industrial work, farming and military affairs. They
should also criticize the bourgeoisie. The period of schooling
should be shortened, education should be revolutionized, and the
domination of our schools by bourgeois intellectuals should by no
means be allowed to continue. - "The Whole Country Should Become a
Great School of Mao Tse-tung's Thought", Editorial,
Renmin Ribao August 1966
The proletarian revolution in education should be carried out by
relying on the masses of the revolutionary students, teachers and
workers in the schools, by relying on the activists among them,
namely those proletarian revolutionaries who are determined to carry
the great proletarian cultural revolution through to the end. -
Renmin Ribao, November 3, 1967
